Fear The Transmedia Narratives

The universe of The Walking Dead originally was introduced to audiences through comics and was later adapted into a TV show by Frank Darabont which loosely followed the storyline of the comics with some plot tweaks to suit the ratings. The comic series are still continuing whilst the TV show is following ahead. Stories within the universe of The Walking Dead is also told through video games as developers created a Telltale game series, as well as another game which follows the character of Darryl. Recently a spin off television show called ‘Fear The Walking Dead’ has been running however receiving negative feedback.

Each of these mediums tell a different story within the Walking Dead universe allowing different experiences as the video game allows the audience to interact with the storyline and their personal experience within the universe.

This is one of many examples wherein stories are told through different mediums to provide an audience with different experiences within a text.In many cases audiences are able to create these Transmedia narratives in the form of fan fiction.

In the media, the focus on how stories are told is called Transmedia Storytelling

Transmedia storytelling according to Henry Jenkins “represents a process where integral elements of a fiction get dispersed systematically across multiple delivery channels for the purpose of creating a unified and coordinated entertainment experience. Ideally, each medium makes it own unique contribution to the unfolding of the story.”

  1. I think the Walking Dead is a really interesting example to have picked up on because you can see how even though the comics and TV show have storylines running concurrently with some pretty major differences despite the shared setting, neither one necessarily has an authority over the other. The two texts remain related but definitively distinct. Cool example!

  2. I agree. I actually had no idea that the walking dead had video games as well as comics and the tv series. This article was extremely effective in breaking down the theory of transmedia to an example I can finally understand! The walking dead! It’s important to understand the distinction between transmedia and multimedia, and this really paints a black and white picture much more interestingly than anything else! So thanks for the great read!

  3. Hey Ryan!
Back again with another comment. I really “dug” your use of the Walking Dead as a transmedia narrative, it was a perfect example and absolutely nailed what a transmedia narrative is! The way you presented it as a Prezi was great too, and definitely inspired the way in which I am going to go about my blog for this subject, so thanks! Your writing style remains great in its succinctness and I like your use of additional images to support and “spice up” your blog visually.
Keep up the good work mate!
